Thank you for the suggestion! I actually loved this book as a little girl and had completely forgotten about it, so I’m so glad you mentioned it. It would be a perfect addition to this list.

In reply to <a href="https://schoolwithmom.com/summer-living-books/#comment-812">Jamie Foote</a>.

That’s a great question. I included "A Day at the Seashore" because it is such a sweet summer book for early readers, especially if you want something simple and seasonal. It is very simple and straightforward, with short sentences and a focus on basic reading practice, so it doesn’t offer as much rich language, depth, or ideas for a child to picture, wonder about, or discuss as aCharlotte Mason type living book would.

Yes, you can certainly still use the McGuffey Readers alongside a language arts program. I just wouldn’t try to make them another full curriculum on top of what you’re already doing. You can simply have your child read a short lesson aloud, talk about it together, and maybe give a brief oral narration. The stories really are lovely and worthwhile, even if they are not your main language arts program.

Hi Karen, hope all is well with you. How would you implement the readers if there was already a language arts program you were using? I'm using a L.A. program this year. Though I know it's against all of what CM teaches I've had to come to this decision for many personal reasons. I really would like to keep using the McGuffeys but I need help figuring out the best way to implement them without it being too much. Thanks in advance!

I saw where you said “A Day at the Seashore” is not considered a living book. Why would it not be considered as such? Just curious what criteria makes it a living book.
